What we do

SAYiT was founded (as the Sheena Amos Youth Trust) in Sheffield in 1999, initially with a focus on sexual health and HIV support for young people, which we continue to offer. Our core function is to transform the lives of LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer / questioning) young people through supportive group work, youth action, education, training, and influence. We are a registered charity (CIO number 1177477).

SAYiT's Mission

  • To provide a youth-centered service delivering a broad range of support for the emotional, mental, and sexual health and wellbeing of LGBTQ+ young people in Sheffield and those who care for and support them.

  • To improve knowledge and awareness and reduce discrimination and inequality through the provision of specialist training and education.

SAYiT's Vision

  • To create an inclusive, safe environment where the emotional and mental wellbeing and sexual health needs of LGBTQ+ young people are supported, empowering them to achieve their best life potential.

SAYiT's Offer

  • Group work and 1:1s for young people aged 8 – 25.

  • Support for the parents and carers of young LGBTQ+ people.

  • Education sessions and assemblies delivered in schools and youth settings in Sheffield on LGBTQ+ awareness and support, HIV and sexual health, anti-bullying, and Pride. Plus help with developing and sustaining gender and sexuality support groups for all young people in Sheffield schools and youth settings.

  • Bespoke training courses to meet the specific needs of organisations and businesses in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, and nationally, who want to learn about LGBTQ+ experiences and ensure inclusivity in their workplaces and services.

Strategic Objectives

  1. Deliver a broad range of services based on the emotional, mental and sexual health needs of LGBTQ+ children and young people’s intersectional identities (e.g. race and ethnicity; disability; religion and belief) and ensure that services, staff and trustees reflect the diversity of the communities we serve.

  2. To meet the emotional wellbeing needs of more LGBTQ+ young people including those facing barriers to support, by developing and fostering innovative approaches to increase our reach.

  3. Further develop our strong network to identify new funders and partners to cement our reputation.

  4. Ensure a comprehensive high-quality training and education offer is in place, sharing our expertise with individuals and organisations to further enhance the lives of young LGBTQ+ people.

  5. Ensure we have the short, medium and long term resources in place to deliver our work and meet the needs of LGBTQ+ young people and those that care for and support them.

  • We are not a crisis service.

  • We don't offer drop-in services.

  • We don’t offer clinical advice.

  • We don’t offer legal advice.

  • We are not a counselling service.

  • Where we aren’t able to offer support directly, we do try to signpost other services where we can (e.g. housing, drug or alcohol misuse, or asylum claims).
