SEXPRESSION NATIONAL CONFERENCE

Updated: Jul 20, 2022

On the 4th November 2012, six of the Side by Side Peer Educators attended the ‘Sexpressions’ National Conference at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. The theme for this year’s conference was “Social Inequality” and how this can affect people’s sexual health.

The conference was made up of over 200 delegates, the majority of which were medical students. Most of the delegates were from the UK however as it was a national conference there were students from further afield including Denmark and Holland.

Side by Side were labelled as the ‘Headline Act’ of the conference and performed in the main conference room. The six Peer Educators performed a piece of self-devised Forum Theatre that explored different situations involving LGBT young people facing oppression. After they had acted out each scenario they invited members of the audience to replace one of the antagonist characters and try and change their behaviours and reactions to bring about a better outcome for the protagonist. The group was thrilled that at least eight students came on stage and got involved and engendered some interesting discussions.

At the end of the piece, our Peer Educators held a Q and A session and answered various questions from the delegates.

Overall the performance was a total success and the students gave us some very positive feedback.

The Conference Coordinator stated:

“The quality of the performance was extremely high and was complimented extensively by our national committee and members from all of our branches.”

Well done to all our young people who go involved on the day!
